And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

The generational line of Christ finds its way to Joseph the carpenter, the earthly father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though Christ was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, His lineage needed to be linked to David and Abraham through His earthly father. This was to remove all doubt that He was indeed the Messiah according to prophecy. Also, Joseph was God’s choice the same way Mary was. His lineage was important. Him being there as a father was key. God was emphasising the importance of family being composed of father, mother and children. He was also emphasising that when two people come together in Holy matrimony, God takes them seriously. The earthly heritage of our Lord, Jesus Christ was a message to us that great things come out of the family.
