He saw the light, and he knew that it was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. God named the light “day,” and he named the darkness “night.” There was evening, and then there was morning. This was the first day.
Genesis 1:4-5 ERV
When God saw the light, He knew it was good. He however chose to separate the light from the darkness creating day and night. From the first verses, scripture tells us that the ‘earth was dark, formless and void.’ However, when light came, darkness disappeared. The light exposed what could not be seen. Now, even the formless earth could be seen…it’s emptiness could be known because the light had exposed it. In the same way the light of day announced His presence, the Spirit of God swooped or hovered over darkness as stated in verse 2. God is a God who’s present in both light and darkness. Nothing escapes His attention. However, a more interesting twist to this creation story was the ‘separation’ of the light from the darkness. God was setting stage for the creation of order before the creation of man. As Pastor Oscar Muriu put it, a rhythm was being set for man to have a sense of time and order. The last portion of verse 5 tells us that ‘this was the first day’. God was creating the sense of time so that as humans, we could comprehend events within defined moments. God was drawing us near to Him from the beginning. He didn’t need time, rhythm or seasons. His nature transcended time and space. However, He needed to create room for us to understand Him within the boundaries of time because this story is His story and the purpose of His story is to reach out to man. God was stretching His hand to us even before our being. The way a mother prepares for a child before birth, God was preparing to receive man way before his creation.
