LIFE SCRIPTS

Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

BLESSED IN ORDER TO INCREASE

God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.
Genesis 1:22‭-‬23 NIV

This is one of the portions of scripture where God actually speaks to His creation. He spoke to the sea creatures and the air creatures (vs 22) blessing them and instructing them to reproduce. It’s interesting that God made a blessing for creatures to reproduce…all species He had created. Yet today, there are quite a number of species both in the sea and in the air that are endangered or even extinct. When God created the animals of the air and the sea, He created a balanced relationship among them. So balanced that He could bless all of them and urge them to be fruitful. It wasn’t worrying that the predators existed with the prey. Ecological balance created by God would control species such that they would thrive. This was God’s original plan for man…to be a steward of His creation. To nurture His creatures when He put him in charge. However, man due to his greed, ultimately when he had unfairly distributed and mismanaged resources granted to him by God, turned against God’s creation. Excessive hunting, encroachment of habitats, destruction of ecosystems has rendered many species in the sea, air and even land extinct or on the brink of extinction. Yet God’s plan was for all to be blessed and be fruitful. A correction of all these imbalances can only be done by returning back to God’s word and His original plan for man after creation… stewardship and not brinkmanship. Are we stewards of our environment or do we want to squeeze the most out of it? Do we desire to preserve a heritage for the future generations or do we have a now-or-never attitude? This scripture reminds us that greed brings with it imbalances. However stewardship brings with it blessings.
