The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
Genesis 2:18 NIV
When God looked at the man He had created, Adam, He felt that he had a need. Scripture says that He said, ‘ It’s not good for the man to be alone. I’ll make a helper suitable for him’. God saw a unique need in man…the need for companionship. Among all the creatures and things He created, He only posed and saw incompleteness in man. Companionship is the most basic need for man. So basic it is that we cannot fully realize our potential without it. God created man to optimise his ability through association with others. However, the companionship God had in mind here was not just a normal association with others but a relationship that transcends normal friendship. A companionship that would complement man. Where the man had weaknesses, the companion would step in and play their part. Where the man needed guidance, the companion would help him with thoughts and advice. Where the man needed help, the companion would be there to assist. That’s why Had spoke of creating a ‘helper suitable for him’. God saw the need even before man could notice it. This must speak to our daily situations. Do we crave for God to meet certain needs in our lives? Do we desire for God to come through for us in our joblessness, sickness, helplessness and family? Well before we even noticed it, He knew about it and in His divine nature He is in the course of meeting that need. We might think we have the solutions to our problems. However, we do not even know our problems. God does. He has known about them before the beginning of time. He is in the business of addressing our problems and meeting our needs in accordance to His riches in glory.
