LIFE SCRIPTS

Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

WHERE ARE YOU?…

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”

Something striking happened after the man and the woman ate the forbidden fruit. Scripture says that …their eyes were opened and they realized that they were naked. They had been naked all along. However, it seemed that they were now concious of their nakedness. They felt exposed. They ended up making coverings from leaves. Later on, when they heard the sound of God walking in the garden, they hid from Him. He however beckoned to man asking him, ‘Where are you?’ All along, man had lived exposed . Yet he was ok before himself and before God. However, after falling into sin, his nakedness became an issue. He felt ashamed before himself and before God. This is not so much shame brought by nakedness. It’s shame brought about by our sinful nature. When both man and woman ate the fruit from the forbidden tree, they acquired a sinful state. Before the sin, they were fully connected to God…they were spiritually alive…because they were free from sin. Now, their newly acquired status was a sinful nature. How would they see themselves? How would God see them? As sinners. As rebellious people. So to cover their shame, they put together leaves and hid themselves from God. It’s amazing how God fellowshipped with them on a daily basis. He walked and communed with them regularly. Before, they were free and relaxed before Him. Now, guilt had set in. They stood accused before Him. Interestingly, the one who led them astray was nowhere to be seen. They were left with a burden too heavy for them to carry. It’s also amazing that the all knowing God who knew their transgression still reached out to them. Their sinful state did not prevent Him from calling them to commune with Him. God was and still is in the business of reaching out to man. As scripture says, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. In this passage, we see God reaching out to Adam and Eve even after they had just plunged into sin. When we sin, a deception creeps in. It speaks to us about our fallen state and tells that we are irredeemable. This deception has a name…a name that is all too familiar…a name that has sent many away from the faith…a name that has led many to take their own lives…a name that intends to put us down with no chance of rising… GUILT! This is the baggage the author of sin leaves us with after enticing us to defy God. However, God doesn’t see us the way we see ourselves when feeling guilty. He sees us as His children. He reaches out to us, just as He did to man as He walked in the garden in the cool of the day. He’s present in our lives. He’s calling unto us. Ours is only to respond and agree to be restored back to Him.
