Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

JUDGEMENT…

14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,

“Cursed are you above all livestock

    and all wild animals!

You will crawl on your belly

    and you will eat dust

    all the days of your life.

15 And I will put enmity

    between you and the woman,

    and between your offspring[a] and hers;

he will crush[b] your head,

    and you will strike his heel.”

(Genesis 3:14-15- NIV)

The woman’s account pointed an accusing finger to the serpent. Whereas the Lord addressed man, He did not give the serpent a chance to respond. The snake was symbolic of the evil one, Satan who is the Father of lies. So God chose not to entertain him but instead pronounced judgement on him. This is a principle we must always have in mind. Give the devil no chance to influence you. Do not listen to his lies. Resist him in all ways possible and he will flee. The curse God pronounced was targeted at the creature, the snake. He connected the snake’s physical appearance to the curse He had pronounced on it. We’re not told whether snakes had legs immediately after creation. However, what’s clear is that the nature of snakes as we see them today is as a result of God’s judgement on their ancestors. Not only that but the Lord put ‘enmity’ between the snakes and man. He stated that…man will crush your head and you will strike his heel. This is very significant in our day and age. There is a seemingly bitter relationship between snakes and man. Many people react defensively at the sight of any snake even the most harmless. However, God was speaking to more than just normal enmity. He was prophesying about the Christ. Christ would come through an earthly heritage. The snake or the devil would strike His heel (orchestrate His death on the cross) but Christ would crush his head (defeat the devil on the cross and bring redemption to mankind). The sinful state which the wicked one had cajoled man into was not the final state of man. God would create a means of redemption for man. Through His Son, the souls of men would be bought at a price. His Son would pay for them. And the redemption of man would be sure.
