Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

CAIN & ABEL

Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.

Here we see the first biblical account of intimacy between a man and a woman. What’s obvious but important to point out is that the man and the woman were intimate after being united by God. In chapter 2 verse 22, God created the woman then brought her to man. It was God showing us that He is the Author and Initiator of marriage. After this unification, sex happened. Sex is never meant to happen between people who’ve not been united in marriage. It’s a fulfillment of the covenant of marriage. Sex outside marriage is not in God’s plan. Also, in this scripture, we see the birth of Cain and Abel, the first children in scripture. Scripture further explains to us their vocations: Cain was a farmer while Abel was a livestock keeper. They were referred to using their vocations. It defined them and made them unique and stand out. As men, we are mostly defined using our vocations. Our vocation identifies us. It makes us unique. It puts us on a pedestal just as it put Cain, the farmer and Abel, the pastoralist.
