Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

STANDING OUT FROM THE CROWD

This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God. Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth. Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.

These verses give us a glimpse into the life of Noah. Verse 9 states that he ‘…was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God’. Noah was not just a man who lived in isolation from the society. Scripture tells us that he was blameless ‘among’ the people of his time. In many ways Noah lived a life like us. He lived amongst sinful people yet was uncorrupted by that same sin. Being blameless didn’t mean that he was agreeable to all. Quite on the contrary. Blamelessness comes as a result of doing the right thing because bad people have no way to nail us if we do right. It may not be agreeable to them but before them, we shall be blameless. Not only that, he also walked faithfully with God. Many centuries later, a man, Jesus Christ would also walk on this earth. He would gain favour before both God and man. Today, we have that opportunity; to choose to live right among others and ultimately to walk faithfully with God. From verse 11, scripture paints for us the picture of sin on earth. It talks of violence in verse 11, corruption in verse 12 and God’s verdict in verse 13. These verses do not only speak of sin in general but talk of specific sins in that age; violence and corruption. Its interesting that God did not even talk about man forsaking to worship Him. Instead His anger burned against man because of the wrongs he committed against fellow man. Our relationship with God determines how we treat each other. As Paul says in the ‘Love’ chapter in Corinthians; if I can speak the tongues of angels and do great and mighty exploits for God yet do not have love and concern for fellow man, then I am nothing (paraphrased). Man’s violence against fellow man; man’s greed which led to corruption and twisting what is right was so loud that it landed on God’s ears. I wonder whether it’s the same case today? However, the life of Noah stood out because he was not in this mix. He had made a choice. Because living right in a society where wrong is considered right requires making a choice to do right irrespective of the outcome…a tall order indeed!!! The kind of choice Daniel, Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego made. The kind of choice Joseph of Genesis made. The kind of choice Christ made. A choice to serve God even if it means we loose because ultimately, we gain. This was Noah’s call and he took it.
