“But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being. “Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind.
Genesis 9:4-6 NIV

In the midst of the immense freedom and influence God gave to man, He demanded responsibility. From verse 4 to 6, we see the call to responsibility God is making to man. He speaks against man eating animals which still have their blood running through their veins or shedding the blood of another human. God was making it clear to man that life is sacred. All life matters before God. But more to that, God was giving freedom to man for him to do as he chose. That freedom however, had boundaries. For instance he could kill and eat animals but still account for them before God; if man kills another man, they were to pay for it by their life. No man on the face of the Earth had the right to misuse the life of fellow man or another creature. In our age, this virtue of accountability is very rare. When we are given positions of power and prestige, we forget that there is One who is the Author of all power. We forget that we’ll be called to account by Him over the resources He has granted us. This responsibility is not just confined to man and beasts but even the environment around us. Greed has led us to toss responsibility out of the window. Those able to feed and feast on more than they need do so as those who aren’t starve to death. This isn’t God’s primary agenda. His agenda was for all to have access to what they need for He has provided enough for all. However, our greed cannot be satisfied by the resources available because others will be deprived and one day, God will call us to account for what He placed in our hands.
