As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.” Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

Commitment is a virtue many of us fear like plague. Yet God was showing commitment not only to Himself but also to man and the animals never ever to destroy the earth by a flood! This same all knowing God who instructed man to be fruitful and multiply knew that sin would increase as a result of man’s depravity and rebellion. Yet He still chose not to destroy the earth again. This scripture in my view depicts God as a long-suffering God. One who will be patient enough to draw sinful man towards Him yet not destroy him. God goes the extra mile to beckon man towards Him. He calls unto us, Come, so that He may restore us back to fellowship with Him. He does not desire in any way to see man being judged and destroyed once again. But more to that, this scripture depicts a God who’s not afraid to make commitments to man. He made a promise to Noah. A promise that He’s kept till today. A promise never ever to destroy man and the earth through a flood because of sin. Today, faithlessness against God is even greater, rebellion against God is even more. Even though God knew it would be so, He still chose to commit never to destroy man again before the Day of Judgement arrives. Commitments are crucial in determining our godly walk. As believers, we must always be true to what we say. Our word must be taken with the weight it deserves just as God’s word. Imagine if we could not fully trust God’s word…even our salvation would be at stake. However, God is always true to His word. When He makes a commitment to us, He remains true to it irrespective of whether we are faithful or not.
