And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.” So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.”

After God made a commitment to Noah and the animals, He went on further to cement this commitment using a sign that would be seen by all generations…a rainbow. Scientists tell us that a rainbow is as a result of the light splitting properties of water leading to individual components of white light as shown on a rainbow. However, whichever way we choose to interpret it, a rainbow is God’s chosen way to communicate to all generations on earth that never again will He destroy the earth using water. Men and women of God built altars as a sign of remembrance of God’s faithfulness. God chose to use the rainbow as a sign of remembrance. It’s a message that transcends generations. It’s a message that is always fresh in our minds once we see it. God is communicating to us that the lives of those who perished still matter before Him. That’s why He sets a sign of remembrance. God is still in the business of speaking to us not only using words but also signs. Today, that great sign that He is showing us is the sign of the cross. The way the rainbow stood for God’s commitment not to destroy the earth with water, the cross is a sign of His eternal forgiveness of the sin of man. In the depth of our sin, He’s still reaching out to us. He’s still beckoning us towards Him.
