Sons were also born to Shem, whose older brother was Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber. The sons of Shem: Elam, Ashur, Arphaxad, Lud and Aram. The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether and Meshek. Arphaxad was the father of Shelah, and Shelah the father of Eber. Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided; his brother was named Joktan. Joktan was the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, Obal, Abimael, Sheba, Ophir, Havilah and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan. The region where they lived stretched from Mesha toward Sephar, in the eastern hill country. These are the sons of Shem by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations. These are the clans of Noah’s sons, according to their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood.

The table of nations now throws it’s focus on Shem. Shem was Noah’s second born as aluded to by this passage. Scripture says that he was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber. It meant that he sired a son named Eber. Shems bloodline would bring forth the children of Israel, the Arabs and the Oriental races.
Shems five sons are mentioned in scripture. The sons of Aram are highlighted further. Later on, the sons of Arphaxad are also highlighted. Aram would later become the father to the Arameans who were related to the ancient Syrians in the middle East. Their language, Aramaic, would be very useful especially during the time of Christ. This was very significant since the descendants of Arphaxad would be the Jews who were bitter enemies of the Arameans in history. Arphaxad’s son, Eber, aluded to in the previous scripture would be the person through which the Hebrew lineage would come from.
Eber had two sons, Peleg and Joktan. Scripture seems to alude to an event happening on earth during the life of Peleg. It states that during his time, ‘…the earth was divided’. It’s not clear about the kind of division that took place. However, some theologians alude to a kind of geological event that rearranged the surface of the earth. Even today, geological events still happen. However, in those days, there might have been simultaneous events that reformed the surface of the earth. Joktan, Eber’s other son seemed to have had many children unlike his father. It’s actually stated in verse 30, the vast expanse of area they lived in.
