LIFE SCRIPTS

Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

ONE PEOPLE. ONE LANGUAGE

But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel —because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

‘If as one people speaking the same language, they have begun doing this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them’…these were the words of God in verse 6. These verses draw out a unique truth about the nature of man…with a unity of purpose, we can accomplish a lot whether good or bad. This is the kind of potential God placed in man. A potential that is activated by the power of association. The kind of people we associate with can either synergize or deflate our drive. In this case, the multitudes on the plains of Shinar were energizing each other to build the tower. God however did not let them move the project towards completion. Instead, the Holy Trinity ‘descended’ down to the level of men and confused their language to stop them from going astray. As puzzling as it looks, this scripture helps us see God’s sovereignty when being involved in earthly affairs. God chooses to act when He chooses to. He chooses not to when He chooses not to. During the time of Noah, when people were very sinful, He chose not to act directly but use the person of Noah to be an example of godliness in a fallen world until judgement through the Flood. Here, again when man was united to exalt himself, God chose to act directly. Was it because there was no one who was faithful to God among these men? Was it because the problem was too big…because it was a global drive that could only be stopped by a great God? Was it because God decided to be compassionate to man by stopping him from going further astray and avoid destruction? God created man to be in-charge of all creation but fully dependent on Him. Here, man seemed to be feeding a fallacy that he could make it by himself without the need of God. God however, in His compassion, scattered man’s empty plans so that He could deflect focus from himself and back to Him. God in His compassion chose to reach out to man even though it looked like He was scuttling his plans. Thereafter, man would scatter on earth and seek after Him. At times this might be the result especially if we’re chasing after things that are not in God’s plan for our lives. God sometimes intervenes and scatters our plans. Probably our focus was skewed towards ourselves. However, God’s plans are always perfect. His goal is for us to find rich fellowship in Him even if it means scuttling our plans in the process.
