Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

BATTLE LINES DRAWN

In the fourteenth year, Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him went out and defeated the Rephaites in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites in Shaveh Kiriathaim and the Horites in the hill country of Seir, as far as El Paran near the desert. Then they turned back and went to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and they conquered the whole territory of the Amalekites, as well as the Amorites who were living in Hazezon Tamar. Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboyim and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) marched out and drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Siddim against Kedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five.

Decision making can be guided by direct divine intervention. However, God could also open up in front of our eyes situations which may help us make right decisions. However, it all depends on whether we have eyes that can see and spirits that can discern. This passage of scripture shows us the influence and power Chedorlaomer and the kings he was allied to had. We’re told that they made great conquests in the fourteenth year of their reign over nations. Great nations such as those of Amalek and the Amorites fell before them. In many ways, they were the undisputed powerhouse of the day. Interestingly, the Canaanite kings had started their rebellion in their thirteenth year of rule. By this time, their rebellion had not yet drawn battle-lines. They still had time to rethink and restrategize. The victories Chedorlaomer and his allies were scoring were top level. Consolidating such a number of strong kingdoms under their rule within one year only meant that they had a battle hardened force ready to take on any challenge that arose. When it should have been obvious for the Canaanite kings to reconsider their move because of a pending defeat, they chose to move ahead with open defiance. In verse 8, we’re told that they marched and drew their battle-lines in the valley of Siddim. In their minds they saw the right opportunity to rebel not knowing that their decision was full of folly. In previous verses, we were told that the people of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful. Their sin had reached sky high so the Lord gave them over to their drives, deprived minds and foolish desires so that they could be misled further into error towards destruction. Sin blinds and makes us see right in the wrong we do. Even if all we need is to employ reason and be safe, sin entices us to employ foolishness and fall into destruction. It drives us to the place where the author of the Proverbs says…there is a way that seems right for a man. But at it’s end is destruction. Such was the way the Canaanite kings walked. At the end, only destruction awaited them!
