Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

ABRAM BELIEVED

After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward. ” But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord , what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.” Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Abram believed the Lord , and he credited it to him as righteousness.

Faith comes by hearing…hearing the word of God. The faith journey begins with a mustard seed moment. However, as we continue in it faithfully, God builds it. He gives us assurances that wipe away any doubt left within our hearts. Questioning our faith in God is sometimes not necessarily a bad thing. It depends on the attitude and motivation behind it. If we desire to understand God’s will Himself in our lives. However, if our goal is to create loopholes to feed our doubts in Him, we’ll run out of favour with Him. In this scripture, God reassured Abram through a vision. Even though he heard God’s reassuarance, Abram still had elements of doubt within him. In Verses 2 and 3, Abram spoke of not having an heir. Even though God had promised him a son, he still went on ahead to choose a man called Eliezer of Damascus as the potential heir of his estate. God didn’t frown at this. Even though Abram showed signs of a lack of faith, he showed it desiring an assurance from God. And God did give him an assurance. After leading him outside to count the stars of the sky, God equated them to his offspring. This wasn’t the only time God had reassured Abram. He had done it before. Yet this scripture is the one that tells us that he ‘believed God’. And it was creditted to him as righteousness. Was it that Abram had finally chosen to believe God at this time? Absolutely not. He had been obedient all through. God infact was responding favourably to his act of faith all along. He was growing in his faith in God. When God takes us on a faith trail, our choice to believe in Him in the face of doubt gives us favour before Him. Faith is one asset that really counts before God. It really counts because it defines our actions. But faith is not spontaneous. It is a deliberate choice we make. It is a step we take. It is trust we put in God. It is belief we choose to have in Him. Voices might be telling us to do the contrary. Probably all along, Abram heard voices questioning his faith in this ‘unknown’ God. However, in the midst of this all, his belief in Him was counted as righteousness because it was a choice he made and not forced to make. This is why faith is a big deal in Christianity. The fact that we choose to follow Christ defines us as His. We are accepted. We belong to Him. We are counted as righteous for His sake.
