Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

ENTER HAGAR

He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.” “Your slave is in your hands,” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.

When Hagar became pregnant, verse 4 says that she began to ‘despise’ her mistress. Hagar had been allowed by her mistress to sire a child with her husband. It must be noted that this was against God’s plan. Nevertheless, what seemed to be a workable and practical plan turned out to be a huge mistake. Hagar, because she could conceive ended up despising her mistress. And this bile within the family didn’t stop there. Sarai transfered this anger and bitterness to her husband even invoking the name of God in the process. Her own seemingly agreeable choice of actions ended up leaving her with the most bitter taste within her mouth. What Sarai intended to bless her family ended up injecting bitterness and hatred instead. All this happened because it wasn’t in God’s plan. God’s plan is always the best plan. At times, we might be tempted to veer from it’s course because things seem not to be adding up. However, if we stick to His plan, all will be well.
