When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty ; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.”
Genesis 17:1-2 NIV

The Lord appeared to Abram when he was 99 years old. In the previous chapter, we read that he was 86 years old during the birth of Ishmael. There seemed to be a period of about 13 years of silence. However, in this instant, as the Lord appeared to Abram, He informs him to walk ‘faithfully and be blameless’. Only then as He states in verse 2, would He fulfill His covenant with him. This was not just a promise God was making to Abram. It was a conditional promise. For Abram to be blessed, he would have to be blameless before the Lord. This is the starting point in our walk with God. Righteousness. God is looking for vessels to use. He could choose to use whichever He so chooses. However, once He settles on using you or me His ultimate desire for us is to be found right with Him. He called Abram from obscurity. His family was from a pagan heritage. However as Abram chose to walk with Him in obedience, He required of him that he continues in obedience. This is a great message to those of us called by God. Us who believe in Christ as Lord and Savior have been called into God’s kingdom. Our calling is a demonstration of God’s choice of us by His grace. However it is required of us to remain committed to Him and be blameless. For our calling to be effective, sin must depart from our lives.
