Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

CIRCUMSICION

And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.
Genesis 17:9‭-‬14 KJV

God after making a covenant with Abraham, created a sign for him and his descendants to identify with him. Circumcision. Verse 11 explains it so clearly. The flesh of the foreskins of male children shall be a token of God’s covenant with Abraham. This sign was to be used on both those who’re born in Abraham’s household, strangers, visitors and others as long as they associated with him closely. God stated also in verse 14 that those not circumcised would be ‘cut off’ from His people. Circumcision brought about a new dimension into God’s relationship with His covenant people… Identity. Identity not only spiritually but also a physical sign to show that these are God’s chosen people. Note that circumcision is a physical sign which is not evident to all. However, it was a show of commitment to God. The God of Abraham. Circumcision was actually done on infants who were 8 years old. The decision to circumcize or not was therefore made by the parents. It was a physical sign act done on the physical descendants of God’s chosen people. But not only that. Anyone who associated with Abraham’s seed had to be circumcised. It went beyond just being a cultural practise among the Israelites to being an act that cements ones identity in God. God was using the Israelites to point others to Him. Circumcision would be one of the ways He would do that. They could influence the faith of others in their influence by circumcision. As long as strangers, sojourners and foreigners chose to dwell with them, they had no choice but to be introduced into a relationship with this God that Israel believes in.
