Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

ISAAC

Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him. When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him. Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”

Another portion of scripture that confirms to us that the promises of God are Yeah and Amen. Verse 1 and 2 of this scripture paints to us a picture of God’s faithfulness. ‘…the Lord was gracious to Sarah AS HE HAD SAID’. It continues saying that ‘…(Sarah) became pregnant…at the very time God had promised’. The promise God had given Abraham and Sarah seemed a long wait away. However, He’s true to His word. And His word came to pass at the very time He had promised. Yes Abraham demonstrated faith during the period of waiting. However, there were moments when his faith waned. That didn’t make God change His mind. He still fulfilled His word as He had promised. What counted is that Abraham ‘believed’ in God and it was counted as righteousness in his favour. Do we believe in what God says about us? Do we even know what God says about us? Our faith in God is the starting point for the life of a believer. We cannot believe in a God we know nothing about. We can’t bank on promises that we’re not aware of. God’s word is full of promises to us. As we read it, we internalize these promises. We believe in Him and He fulfills them in our lives in His time. But the birth of Isaac brought out something else as described by scripture…joy. In verse 6 and 7 Sarah said that with the birth of Isaac, God had brought her ‘laughter’ at her old age. When God shows up in our lives our circumstances and moods are never left the same. We have an attitude of joy. It comes from within. When God transforms our situations, we rejoice not only by ourselves but together with those who hear about the Lord’s doing in our lives. One of the greatest moments of joy in anyone’s life is during the birth of a child. It’s a moment all of us treasure. But how more joyful it is when after a long wait, a couple is blessed with a child. Even after years in marriage, a couple would seem like newly weds during such moments. Such was the joy and happiness in the life of Abraham and Sarah. The joy of a son born during their old age.
