Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Through repentance, we gain forgiveness. However through confession, we are healed. There’s something stunning about two believers sitting down while facing each other and choosing to confess their sins to each other…a practice that is rare in our age. But scripture speaks well of it. The result of sins confessed to each other is a freedom like no other. Imagine the times you’ve fallen from far…imagine the times sin encompassed you luring you to very unfamiliar territory. Once respected and even revered because of your faith but now deep within yourself, you know the height you’ve fallen from. Imagine just taking that step of faith, calling a brother or a sister (who you’re friends with) and opening up about your failures and struggles. Yes, it might send shock waves through their spines but only instantly. Ultimately, you find relief, acceptance and respect before God and man. Imagine the story of David when confronted with the adulterous sin. He didn’t justify it…he didn’t threaten prophet Nathan…he instead turned his face to God and asked for forgiveness. But probably he wouldn’t have done it were it not for a prophetic rebuke. When our lives are opened up before men, we gain healing and acceptance. God has placed us together to support each other…to empathize and pray for each other. When one confesses sin, the other gets the courage to confess theirs. Confession releases many of us from the prison we walk in everyday…the secrecy in which sin thrives holding us hostage. But no more when we choose confession. We free each other in the process. May God enable each one of us to find mentors and friends we can confide in so that we gain freedom from the secrecy of sin.
