Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

CONTAGIOUS FAITH

This is the account of the family line of Abraham’s son Isaac. Abraham became the father of Isaac, and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram and sister of Laban the Aramean. Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was childless. The Lord answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord . The Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”
Genesis 25:19‭-‬23 NIV

The story of Gods choice carried on from Isaac. Scripture says that his wife, Rebekah was childless. So Isaac prayed for her to have a child. The Lord heard his prayers and answered him. Rebekah became expectant with not only one but two children. There is something about Isaac’s faith that’s contagious. We’re not told about Rebekah’s faith. All we know is that she was the daughter to Bethuel, Abraham’s nephew who was the son to Nahor whom he had left in Haran. Abraham’s kinsmen had not known Jehovah. But news had reached them about Abraham’s faith. We see the way they took Abrahams servant seriously when he came to ask for Rebekah’s hand on behalf of Isaac. Isaac had grown in faith through seeing his father exercising it. He also learnt that faith can work. So instead of complaining and crying to God, he chose to commit his wife to God in prayer. We see later in verse 22 when Rebekah learnt that the babies in her womb were jostling with each other. By this time, her faith in God had graduated so she went to inquire of Him by herself and the Lord answered her prayer. He told her that two nations were jostling inside of her. That the older will serve the younger. This passage in scripture highlights how faith can be transferred. The icon of faith Abraham, who’s faith in God moved mountains influenced his son, Isaac to cultivate faith. Isaac on his part influenced his wife to cultivate faith. Faith never leaves our surroundings the same. It influences and transforms. When we demonstrate working faith, others are encouraged to practise that same faith. This is the story of faith. It never leaves us the same way.
