LIFE SCRIPTS

Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

THE TWINS…

When the right time came, Rebekah gave birth to twins. The first baby was red. His skin was like a hairy robe. So he was named Esau. When the second baby was born, he was holding tightly to Esau’s heel. So that baby was named Jacob. Isaac was 60 years old when Jacob and Esau were born.

Several eye catching events stick out from this passage: This is the first instance in scripture on the account of twins. These children seemed to have a lot in common (they could have been identical, they shared the same space from the womb) yet they were made so different from each other. Esau seemed like the bare-chested macho guy to be yet Jacob seemed like the spoilt son of the mom to be. God had defined their personalities from before birth. Even when in their mothers womb, they fought and jostled. Two nations were coming yo be even at the conception stage. Nothing is a coincidence before God. As things happen, He already has the future panned out in front of Him. No events catch Him unprepared. But yet another striking feature about this story is the age of Isaac during the birth of his sons. Scripture says that he was 60 years old. If he had married Rebekah at 40, then it means that they waited for a child for 20 years. Isaac passed through the same kind of situation his father went through before his conception. Yet scripture puts it clearly that he continued praying to God to open up the womb of his wife. Not so much is said about him waiting for 20 years. The walk of faith at times leads us towards the patient path. Things may not go as we expect or as fast as we expect. God’s time may not be our time. Waiting in the Lord is part of our journey of faith. Isaac teaches us clearly.
