Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

REST…REST…REST

“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

God has blessed the Sabbath and made it holy. He worked six days and blessed the seventh so that we could worship Him. We go to church on sabbath…we dedicate it to fellowshipping with others…but do we really desist from work on this day? Even as the Lord blessed Israelites with manna, He allowed them to gather daily rations except on the day before the Sabbath when they gathered twice as much because they were to rest. Today, the world of work at times demands of us to work during the sabbath. Some of us abscond church, spending time with family, praying and fellowshipping because of our work. Technology doesn’t make things easier. It’s so easy to fidget with our phones and engage ourselves mentally even on the Sabbath day yet God has asked of us to set it aside as holy. It may sound controversial but isn’t it a wonder that a pandemic has suddenly grounded the whole world to a halt? A world that’s always been busy…a world where there’s no rest…a world where your net worth is defined by a rat race…where the faster, the more agile, the more shrewd and enterprising you are, the better…even on the day of sabbath. Isn’t it a wonder that even the most hardworking person is resting at home? Probably it’s God’s reminder to us to remember to rest on the sabbath. To dedicate this day to Him in worship. Perhaps such times enable us to take stock of our lives, reboot and recalibrate. They help us understand the true meaning of Sabbath…a day of rest from all that defines work. But also a day dedicated to God.
