Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

FROM THE ASHES…

From there Isaac went to Beersheba. The Lord spoke to him that night and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Don’t be afraid. I am with you, and I will bless you. I will make your family great. I will do this because of my servant Abraham.” So Isaac built an altar and worshiped the Lord in that place. He set up camp there, and his servants dug a well.
Genesis 26:23‭-‬25 ERV

After being chased from the land of the Philistines, Isaac moved to the place called Beer-Sheva. Beer Sheba was the same place where Abraham had made a covenant with the earlier Philistine ruler. The name by itself meant the seven wells or the well of oath. The Lord assured him at this low point in his life that He was with him. He reiterated the promise He had made to Abraham and asked Isaac not to be afraid. Isaac’s circumstances were dire. He had a flourishing agricultural enterprise in Philistia. However, after being banished from the land, him, his clansmen, his servants and flocks must have been between a rock and a hard place. It seemed as if after years of establishing himself, he was now being relegated back to square 1. He was at a point where he was to start all over again. But God in His mercy assured him and was with him. Isaac built an altar and worshipped God. He took God at His word. Whatever God said to him, he believed and banked on it. When life’s storms hit us left right and centre, they leave us overwhelmed and confused. When crises such as loss of a job, loss of a loved one, break up of a marriage or even debt hit us, we feel as if we’ve reached rock bottom. God however still speaks to us in the midst of these crises and the fear they instill. He tells us to ‘FEAR NOT’. Also, just in the same way He assured and reminded Isaac of the promises to his father, He continuously reminds us of His promises towards us centred upon His word. The fact that it seems hardest to trust in God and His word during such moments of affliction make them the acid test for our faith in Him. As we choose to trust in Him, He never leaves us alone. We may be rock bottom but with God on our side, we can rise up from the ashes and conquer the skies. The Philistines had frustrated Isaac. They had destroyed or stolen his wells, they had intimidated his servants and now they had chased him from their land knowing well that he had farmed crops there. Isaac had lost a fortune. However, as he believed in God, He opened doors for him. Doors that seemed albeit small but we’re a stepping stone to greater heights. At the end of verse 25, Isaac set up camp in Beer Sheba and dug a well. Even though he had abandoned many wells to the Philistine intimidators, God was raising him up again. His attitude focused on God to lift him up and he took the leap of faith a step at a time, a day at a time. As we sit at the rock bottom, we must know that God is on our side. Since God is for us, it’s no time for a pity party but a time to rise up,dust ourselves and get moving. The first steps may be painful to take, the heart may be heavy but move all the same. Isaac had lost a fortune. Here he begun with sinking a single well as God led him on a path of recovery. That first step might mean that you move out of your comfort zone. Whether it’s starting a business, an initiative or even doing the unthinkable, move! And as we do, God leads us in a path towards His perfect will.
