Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

THE SLAIN SAINTS

When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held. And they cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” Then a white robe was given to each of them; and it was said to them that they should rest a little while longer, until both the number of their fellow servants and their brethren, who would be killed as they were, was completed.

The days of the great tribulation would be deadly for saints. Those who would choose the way of the cross would ultimately be killed. Here, after the opening of the 5th seal, John saw their souls crying out in a loud voice for God’s judgement upon the people of the earth. But they were to rest a little longer until the completion of the number of those to be killed. Yet in the midst of their pain and grief, they were given white robes, they were celebrated as saints who had kept the faith and finished the race. The world was unfair to them but God rewarded them after they had remained faithful. They lived their lives with eternity in mind and their reward was sure. These were men and women who must have been forced to compromise during the time of tribulation. They must have faced a tremendous amount of opposition to their faith because during this time, the church of Christ would be in heaven and a deception would reign in peoples heart. Yet they kept the faith and paid the ultimate price. What price are we prepared to pay for our faith today? It might not be death but for some of us, we might need to say ‘No’ to things we have been watching, hearing, speaking, tasting and even smelling (as Bishop Oginde puts it). Things that are normal around us yet sinful before God… Acceptable in society but wrong in God’s sight. Yes though we might lose out big if we stand our ground, we know that we will gain much the day we come into God’s presence. White robs will be our reward and the presence of God would refresh us.
