Then the second angel sounded: And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood. And a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed. Then the third angel sounded: And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the water, because it was made bitter.

The second and the third trumpets of judgement were blown. The waters of the sea experienced a wonder never seen before. A great mountain burning with fire fell and destroyed a third of the sea life. The effects of nuclear weapons won’t just be felt on land but also in the sea. Most nuclear powers store their arsenals at sea in aircraft carriers and submarines. In the event that this conflict is taken to the sea, great damage will ensue. But John saw a ‘Great Mountain of fire’ being hurled into the sea. This must have been something big. Today, as several nations pile up nuclear arms, one wonders whether they will be used ultimately given the amount of destruction that would go with it. Scripture is pointing us towards a reality during the great tribulation we seldom see coming…the nuclear weapons we see today will ultimately be used by man. And they will bring dramatic destruction. The third angel’s trumpet brought about a vision of a ‘great star’ falling from heaven which rendered water bitter as wormwood. People would die from this water. Nuclear weapons not only kill immediately but also unleash an environmental catastrophe like no other of it’s kind. The pollution of rivers, underground water, springs and lakes by radioactive isotopes is what is used to figuratively refer to the water as ‘bitter’. People will die out of poisoning. This is not a new picture of things. Such an event happened albeit at a small scale in Chernobyl, the Ukraine. A nuclear reactor accident leaked risky metallic isotopes destroying an entire community in the process. People died but also many had to relocate. This misery will compound during this difficult time.
