LIFE SCRIPTS

Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

Hope in Despair 1

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.
2 Corinthians 4:7‭-‬9 NIV

This scripture speaks about the travails of a believer. It reminds us that situations around us might change for the worst. But God’s faithfulness doesn’t. He still sustains us amidst all challenges around us. The illustration of treasures in jars of clay evokes an image of value within vulnerability. We have valuable deposits in us…

His salvation…

His redemption…

His Good News…

yet surrounding this value is weakness…

frailty…

Stubbornness of the human nature. Life’s challenges also don’t leave us unscathed. Situations around us might change for the worst. We might be hard pressed and crushed from all corners by situations beyond our control. But all this pressure on a piece of clay? Definitely it will cave in. But not so for those sustained by Him. We are hard-pressed but not crushed… How? Because He sustains us. It’s not by power nor by might but by the Holy Spirit. We are perplexed by astonishing events around us that shake us to the core. We’re thrown aback and are dumbfounded. And when despair is about to kick in, we are reassured of God’s presence with us in the thick of things just as He walked with Isrsel in the wilderness. The truth of the matter is God is always by our side. He might not remove the challenge but will be with us every step of the way. We are persecuted by people around us. We might have lost it all after the pandemic rips us open leaving us vulnerable. And our lack of money compounded with lost opportunity repels people from us. We have become a by-word after shifting from from the leafy suburbs to the bedsitter… Our children face ridicule after their schooling is scaled down due to financial challenges. Our jobs might be lost and we lose face before men. Persecuted we are but yet not abandoned. Struck down we are but not destroyed. Because He Who’s in us is greater than He who’s in the world.
