Then the fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit. Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. They were commanded not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree, but only those men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. And they were not given authority to kill them, but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man. In those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them.

The fifth angel sounded the trumpet and lo and behold…a fallen star pounded earth with a vengeance. But this was no ordinary star, it was the Devil himself. Remember he was once an angel but lost his place in God’s presence. God allowed him to roam around the earth and gave him limited power to do so. We see this from the story of Job where he could torment him but not kill him. But this time, it seems as if he had been empowered further. He had been granted keys to the bottomless pit or the abyss. He had deceived a third of the angels in heaven who became the demons. God in His mercy had however locked up the most potent of demons in the abyss until their time for release came. Now the Devil had the keys to the abyss. And when he unlocked it…alas…the demons were unleashed in the forms of locusts which had scorpion like stings. So numerous were they that it looked like a smoky release from a furnace. They were released to torment men who did not have the seal of God for five months. Theirs was not a sting to kill but a sting to torment men. In fact men would desire death but it will not come to them. They will look for hiding places but these scorpion stingers would be armed with wings to fly. They would penetrate and protrude wherever they so desired. Picture all death row prisoners being released and given an M-16 automatic rifle as they leave. Such will be what’s at play here. Demons condemned to hell being released and given all instruments of torture to torment men. The sting of a scorpion is one that is feared. Now picture numerous stings and the unimaginable pain that goes with it. These days of the great tribulation would be dramatically painful to say the least.
