Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

The sixth angel

Then the sixth angel sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a third of mankind. Now the number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them. And thus I saw the horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow; and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone. By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed—by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths. For their power is in their mouth and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they do harm. But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.

Whatever happens on earth is not coincidental. It doesn’t take God by surprise because our lives and hearts are in His hand. The sixth trumpet brought about a unique event. Four angels were ordered to be released by the sixth angel. These angels had been bound at the great river Euphrates. The voice which gave this instruction came from the golden altar before God meaning that this was ordained of Him. The Euphrates is a unique river since between it and the river Tigris sprung up one of the ancient cities which had great biblical significance… Babylon. But the river Euphrates was also a barrier to an invading army. An army approaching from the east. An army so vast and large that it would have over 200 million soldiers. Which army might that be? You may ask… By 2019, the number of citizens who were fit for military service in China were over half a billion. In other words, China could easily mobilize a 200 million strong army which would march the expanse of the Asian continent overrunning populous nations like India, Pakistan and Iran. Their destination being the nation of Israel in the middle east. But to do this, they’ll have to cross the Euphrates. The river will be dried up to facilitate this march which could possibly be led and commandeered by generals possessed with demons released from the abyss. John described fire and brimstone proceeding from the mouths of their horses possibly alluding the use of mortar and artillery. This powerful army will condone no opposition. It will destroy all that’s on its path towards the plains of Megiddo where the final battle would be waged. Even though many would die in this monumental advance, the rest of mankind would still continue defying God. People will continue in idolatry and immorality as mentioned in verses 20 and 21. Just like pharaoh of old, people’s hearts will be hardened all the more by the passing of these plagues but isn’t that just what sin does? It makes us callous and insensitive…it puts us on a slippery slope towards self destruction. Though God sends signs and events to warn us to turn back to Him, our minds are usually made up when we decide to live in sin.
