Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

The measuring ‘Reed’…

Then I was given a reed like a measuring rod. And the angel stood, saying, “Rise and measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there. But leave out the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, for it has been given to the Gentiles. And they will tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two months. And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.” These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the God of the earth. And if anyone wants to harm them, fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. And if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this manner. These have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire.
Revelation 11:1‭-‬6 NKJV

John was granted a rod….a Reed like device for measurement. He was told to measure the length and breadth of the temple in Jerusalem but not the Gentile court. It is suspected that the place where Solomon originally constructed the temple is located besides the great dome mosque which is a great landmark in Jerusalem. But chances are that it could be several tens or hundreds of meters away according to some historians. The antichrist in his first 3 and half years of leadership will seek to entice Israel by not only negotiating a world class peace deal between them and their sworn enemies but to reconstruct the temple next to the dome mosque. This would be a sign of a unity of faith…’…it doesn’t matter whether you’re Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Agnostic or whatever…we all’ worship’ the same god…’…sounds familiar? But the interesting thing is probably the place where the temple would be constructed is actually the place where the original temple stood. And John is instructed to measure the temple but to ignore the outer courts which belong to the Gentiles (possibly referring to the dome mosque which will stand side by side to the temple). In these days, God will send His two witnesses to prophesy in sackcloth. Though their identity is not fully disclosed, we could deduce from verse 6 that they could be Elijah (who shut the heavens in the days of Ahab) and Moses (who turned the waters of the river Nile into blood). Elijah was captured up in the skies and rode to heaven. He never tasted death. But though Moses died, his body was buried by God Himself. In fact Jude talks about a tussle between archangel Michael and the devil about Moses’ body. God would use both Moses and Elijah to speak His truths during this time. They would challenge people and the establishment of the antichrist. Some people will probably believe them and turn from their unbelief. God will give these two witnesses supernatural powers to devour their enemies using fire from their mouths. They will prophecy 1260 days or for three and a half years. They will represent the olive trees, the golden lampstands: artefacts used to represent the presence of God’s Spirit. They will be a light in the midst of thick darkness. Christ urges us to be the light of the world. To be ready to shine His truth out there. But He also reminds us that in this world, we’ll have many troubles but we should worry not for He has overcome the world.
