Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them. Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” “What did Moses command you?” he replied. They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.” “It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”
Mark 10:1-12 NIV

The issue of divorce and remarriage sprang up from the Pharisees questioning Christ. Ideally, they expected an answer that would contradict what the law says. But Christ knew their hearts and how to respond to them. He laid ground for the basis of marriage. In marriage, two people, man and woman become one. They leave their families to unite into one flesh. Being one flesh by itself means that separation would hurt both of them. And this is what extramarital sex does to us. It tears our hearts and injures our spirits. But as Christ sat down with His disciples, He expounded further on the issue of divorce bringing in a new twist…remarriage. Explicitly, Christ spoke out against remarriage after divorce as adultery. Perhaps we might not relate to the sociocultural scenario then. But this would have flown off wrongly in such a patriarchal society. Some rabbinical teachings were so liberal on issues of divorce that such a statement would have caught them unawares. God’s truth remains the same regardless of situation. He doesn’t change. The same truth then reigns supreme today. Divorce and remarriage is an affront against God’s plan for one man united to one woman. True, it’s dicey and complicated today. There are believers who’re divorced and remarried and serving God in church. What is their standing before God? How does God view them in light of eternity? Well these are theological questions beyond the scope of a lay person like myself. But one thing I can draw from God’s word is… For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
Hebrews 8:12 NIV and If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9 NIV. However, this is surely not a ticket to live in sin for our redemption through Christ enables us to renounce old ways and live right before Him. Divorce and remarriage is spoken of clearly in God’s word. It’s important that we abide by God’s instructions.
