Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.” “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

The story of blind Bartimaeus is the story of all of us. A story of people held in bondage, captivity, infirmity…maybe sin. But above all it’s a story of the power of redemption through Christ. Bartimaeus was one of those ordinary blind men who sat on the roadside possibly begging for alms. But this day was different. The Son of Man was in the area and it meant an encounter with redemption. But Christ rarely walked alone. He was surrounded as usual by a multitude. What was he to do? How could such a helpless blind man catch the attention of Christ? By raising his voice and calling on him the best way he could. Not that Christ didn’t know he existed. But his desire to be healed was so strong nothing…not even people’s tongues could deter him. So as people tried to stop him, he called all the more. As people deterred him he went all out. It’s no different when life’s challenges pound us from all corners.
Those times we feel as if God is visiting others while seemingly passing us by…
those times when what’s happening around us seems more appealing than what’s going on in our lives…
those times when we’re down, out and defeated and feel we amount to nothing.
All it takes is calling upon Christ…
‘Jesus, Son of David have mercy on us!’
When we call on Jesus all things are possible.
