Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

THE POOR WIDOW AND TWO COINS

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”
Mark 12:41‭-‬44 NIV

This wonder story is a lesson to us in this age of materialism. Isn’t it amazing how Christ sat and observed people as they gave? But what’s striking is His conclusions sprung up not from those who gave much out of plenty but this poor lady who gave little out of her lack. It’s interesting that she wasn’t just a lady but a widow…lonely, disadvantaged and poor. What she gave stuck out like sore thumb because she gave sacrificially. Though she needed it, she still remained faithful to her God. Faithfulness matters on matters giving. I can find ways to justify my not giving to God even when He’s supplied me with all I need. But I’ve also seen God’s faithfulness when I choose to obey Him fully and give sacrificially. He always opens doors of financial blessing. Being in need is not a reason to desist from giving our tithe or offering. Instead it’s an opportunity to ‘try and test’ God (Malachi 3) and see Him opening up the windows of heaven and blessing us. But many times when financial needs engulf us, we are tempted to hold back from God. Instead, we must choose to do the opposite …to give because it’s part of worship. Just as He observed the widow’s heart and circumstances, Christ sees our situations. In the same way He testified on behalf of this lady, He’ll testify on our behalf. Reason: We’ve chosen to give not because we have but despite not having.
