Mark 14:1-9 NIV

The woman with the alabaster box speaks to us in several ways:
1. ‘Come to me all ye who labor and are heavily laden and I will give you rest’. These are the words of Christ in Matthew 11:28-30. He beckons those of us with burdens to go to Him to gain rest. This woman must have had a challenging life. She chose not to despair but to approach Christ in the midst of a hostile society. She gained rest.
2. ‘A broken and a contrite heart, Oh Lord You’ll not despise’: Psalm 51:17. These are the words of David when he sought forgiveness from the Lord from the sin of adultery. God honors a broken spirit. Here, this woman, though with a questionable reputation ‘broke herself’ before Christ. She didn’t come harboring entitlement but with a spirit of humility. I can imagine she even didn’t lift her face before Him but just lowered herself as much as she could. We have a choice to make in life…we could choose to either humble ourselves or we shall be humbled. If we humble ourselves, the Lord will lift us up.
3. ‘But we have these treasures in jars of clay’: 2 Cor. 4:7. The woman in this story had a jar with a precious perfume. But the perfume couldn’t be poured out before breaking it up. Our hearts hold a treasure in them. God is in search for our hearts. But our hearts can only turn to God if they are broken before Him. Yes, the ‘heart of man is sinful and desperately wicked’ (Jeremiah 17:9). But a heart that is broken before God is a sweet smelling aroma (2 Cor. 2:14-17). A broken heart is open for God to deposit His value in it. This way, it breeds a person who impacts the world in immeasurable ways.
