While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them. “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

The Holy Communion is an important aspect of the life of any believer. In fact so central it is that we ought to be taking it every week if possible (in my view). Christ, while enjoying the passover meal with His disciples pauses, takes the bread, gives thanks, breaks it and offers it to His disciples. ‘This is my body which is offered for you’, He states. In the same way, He picks the cup, gave thanks again and offered it to them stating that this is the blood of the new covenant. This was definitely a new beginning. Christ’s death on the cross would shift things in a way not seen before. Telling a Jew to partake of the ‘blood’ of the One who’ll cleanse him from all of his sins would be outlandish. But Christ was calling upon them to do exactly that…to partake of the communion as a sign of the things to come. But for us, it’s a remembrance of what Christ did for us on the cross. The act of partaking the holy communion calls us to attention. It reminds us of the sacrificial work of Christ on the cross. It stings our minds in the event we have been living in sin. It prompts us to repent, turn back and seek a life of honor and obedience through the Spirit. But also Communion is not just a meal. It’s a meal of remembrance and reflecting. Christ paused from the eating, gave thanks and offered the bread and the cup. He had to define that moment for His disciples to take note of. Holy Communion is not a time of merry making but of reflection and self searching. As we partake of it, we ought to check our lives and see whether we have been living right or not. Communion drives us towards Christ…the reason why we must partake of it often.
