“You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written: “ ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.” “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times.” But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.

When the leader is struck, the flock scatters. Christ was alluding to His arrest which would scatter His disciples. This same kind of scatter took place in the book of Acts when the church faced persecution. However, the scatter of the church during that age led to the penetration of the gospel in places where it was unheard of. The persecutions and threats during this time would intimidate His disciples. But the headstrong ones like Peter claimed that he would stand firm and not fall into denying Christ. But Christ stated the opposite. Peter would deny Christ thrice. Zeal alone doesn’t sustain us in faith. What happens when it’s challenged by persecution? We could be overzealous that we’ll accomplish things for God, witness for Him, live for Him. But if that zeal is of our own making, then we stand a chance of falling. Even as we depend on God we should ask Him to lead us through His Spirit so that we walk right before Him. When anticipating challenges, yes we should be headstrong. However, this zeal should be out of our faith that He’ll see us through and not that we’ll do it alone.
