They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire. The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree. Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.’ ” Yet even then their testimony did not agree. Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death. The trial of Christ was one dominated with confusion. The high priest couldn’t place any charge upon Him simply because Christ was blameless. So they brought imposters to trump up charges against Him and even then they didn’t agree. This is one of the account that proves that Christ lived a blameless life on earth. If there was any iota of indecency in His life, it would have been revealed then. But He had walked blameless the whole time that His tormenters had such a hard time finding fault. They couldn’t just manhandle Him to crucifixion because there was a court of public opinion before them. They had to prove beyond any reasonable doubt that He’s guilty. So they resorted to using the last trick up their sleeve. They asked Him to answer for the trumped charges placed before Him. But instead, He confessed that He’s the Messiah and the Son of God. And this was the last straw that broke the camel’s back. So they led Him towards the Roman authorities. Christ acknowledged that He’s come to redeem us from sin. And this put Him on the wrong footing with the religious folk because they couldn’t handle the truth. A truth that they had read in the prophecies, heard from John the Baptist and seen Christ live. It was evident that Christ is the Messiah but their stubborn hearts refused to acknowledge it. But all this was spoken of and had to happen because God’s will was in the picture.
