At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.” Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said. With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!” Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome. In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there. Mark 15:33-41 NIV

The crucifixion of Christ was a great spectacle. This event led to darkness in the whole land for three hours. His body was bound onto the tree and stretched wide. He must have been writhing in pain as He succumbed slowly to death. There He was all alone bearing my sin, your sin, our sin on that cross. He cried out with a loud voice, ‘Father, Father, why have you forsaken me?’. Instead of comfort and understanding, the guys below Him offered Him a sponge filled with vinegar. He must have been thirsty while hanging in the midday sun in the middle east. Yet he remained steadfast and gave up His ghost yielding His humanness to the Heavenly Father. A spectacle not seen before ensued right after this. The thick curtain used to separate the Most Holy place in the temple was reaped apart from top to bottom…top to bottom symbolyzing that this wasn’t the work of man but the doing of God. No man even had the capacity to tear it open with his bare hands. Before, only the high priest had the right to enter into God’s most holy presence. In this new era, each and everyone of us has access courtesy of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. Christ’s death on the cross defeated sin and gave humanity a new lease of life.
I am forgiven: Lord, thank You for dying for me on the cross. Forgive me of sin Oh God. Let me live my life everyday knowing the value of redemption on the cross. Thank you. In Jesus name.
