Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

STEP OUT… FEAR NOT

Moses reported this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their discouragement and harsh labor. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the Israelites go out of his country.” But Moses said to the Lord , “If the Israelites will not listen to me, why would Pharaoh listen to me, since I speak with faltering lips ?”Exodus 6:9‭-‬12 NIV

A situation started unfolding here. God’s promises to the Israelites was reported to them by Moses. However, since the people were experiencing a high level of oppression, they didn’t give any attention to it. They were a discouraged lot. In many ways we mirror Israelites when it comes to trusting in God’s word in the midst of suffering. But it is an encouragement that God still speaks to us even in the midst of discouragement and challenges like oppression. When we struggle with sorrow, grief, unemployment, terminal illness, conflict etc. we are bound to turn a blind eye to God’s promises over our lives and become discouraged in the process. But we are reminded that God is still at work. He still is in the business of saving His people. He still is in the business of sending people His chosen (such as Moses) to speak deliverance to His people. When the Lord sent Moses again in verse 10, he resisted. His reasons were that since Israel didn’t listen to him and so pharaoh won’t. But does the Lord send us without preparation? Picture the first time he faced pharaoh. God prepared him to perform signs and wonders before the king. God was asking Moses to proceed to pharaoh because He would use him. However fear captivated him. Challenging situations may invite us to be fearful. God on His part invites us to trust in Him. When the action God is sending us to accomplish is a tall order, all He seeks from us is obedience. All He desires of us is to do as He directs. We may not be squarely in Moses’s position in our lives but God has equipped us with various gifts and talents which can be used to serve people. But as we hear God’s voice urging us to step forward and be used of Him, we shy off… we fear what others would think of us… we fear criticism. God is calling upon us to trust in Him. Even after this episode, God still used Moses. In the same way, God will lead us and use us.
