Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet. You are to say everything I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his country. But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I multiply my signs and wonders in Egypt, he will not listen to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and with mighty acts of judgment I will bring out my divisions, my people the Israelites. And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of it.” Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord commanded them. Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh.
Exodus 7:1-7 NIV

In the final verses of the chapter before, Moses displayed reluctance to give Pharaoh the divine message. He felt inadequate and insignificant. But in these verses, God reiterates His choice of Moses. In fact He tells him that He’s made him like a god. Everything he would say would be backed by power, signs and wonders. God also stated that He would harden Pharaoh’s heart so that He demonstrates His power among the Egyptians. It’s scary business when God hardens our hearts. But all it takes for us to come to that point is unbelief. Pharaoh’s defiance against God would bring judgement to a nation. Leaders of a nation are tasked with leading people towards God. But if they are defiant and apostate, the nation suffers because of God’s judgment. But before judging, He always sends a warning. He always sends messengers to confront the powers that be concerning their sin. Here, He sent Moses and Aaron. In the days of the Judges and Kings, He sent prophets. In our days He sends us the Holy Spirit to convict us of sin in order to turn Christ-wards. The Spirit of God moves in our lives either to show compassion, to counsel us or to convict us of sin. If we choose to obey and seek God then He is pleased. But if we don’t, our hearts and minds harden against His desires in our lives. We continue justifying the wrong we do going deeper and deeper into sin. Moses’ age at the time of being sent was something to notice. He was 80 years old yet starting his ministry… at the beginning of his career. The first 40 years of his life had been spent in Egypt before escaping to Midian where he spent the next 40 years of his life. And while in the wilderness, God called him. Times and seasons belong to the Lord. Whenever He calls us, ours is to obey Him and follow. It’s never too late for God to use us. It doesn’t matter how old we are or what kind of experiences shape us. When He calls us, He equips us and leads us.
