Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that darkness spreads over Egypt—darkness that can be felt.” So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and total darkness covered all Egypt for three days. No one could see anyone else or move about for three days. Yet all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived. Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, “Go, worship the Lord . Even your women and children may go with you; only leave your flocks and herds behind.” But Moses said, “You must allow us to have sacrifices and burnt offerings to present to the Lord our God. Our livestock too must go with us; not a hoof is to be left behind. We have to use some of them in worshiping the Lord our God, and until we get there we will not know what we are to use to worship the Lord .” But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he was not willing to let them go. Pharaoh said to Moses, “Get out of my sight! Make sure you do not appear before me again! The day you see my face you will die.” “Just as you say,” Moses replied. “I will never appear before you again.” Exodus 10:21-29 NIV.

Pharaoh tried to strike a compromise with Moses but to no avail. All this was brought about by the plague of darkness. If pharaoh doubted Jehovah’s supernatural nature, this must have brought reality to him. While the Egyptians suffered darkness for three continuous days, the Israelites enjoyed light…two separate people walking in very separate circumstances because of God’s displeasure and favour respectively. Today, God’s favour is upon each and everyone of us who chooses Christ, the Light of the world. As other grapple in darkness, we can walk shining the light that is in us. The interesting thing with light is it cannot be concealed. As we do our business, it is seen. But scripture once more talks of God hardening the heart of pharaoh further. Infact his heart became so hard and callous that he chased out Moses from his presence threatening him with death if he ever appeared before him. He was a man who led the most powerful nation at the time yet beheld a God more powerful than his armies. Pride and arrogance led him to stubbornness. He refused to acknowledge God. Stubbornness, arrogance, pride, deceit lead us to a pit. When we enjoy the trappings of power, we’re at times tempted to think of ourselves more highly than others. But God has a way of humbling people. He did it with Pharaoh, He did it with Nebuchadnezzar, He did it with Sennacherib and other men of power. Conviction of sin comes from the Holy Spirit. So today when you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as pharaoh did. Turn to Him, repent and walk right.
