Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

THE MASS EXODUS

During the night Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Up! Leave my people, you and the Israelites! Go, worship the Lord as you have requested. Take your flocks and herds, as you have said, and go. And also bless me.” The Egyptians urged the people to hurry and leave the country. “For otherwise,” they said, “we will all die!” So the people took their dough before the yeast was added, and carried it on their shoulders in kneading troughs wrapped in clothing. The Israelites did as Moses instructed and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold and for clothing. The Lord had made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so they plundered the Egyptians. The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Sukkoth. There were about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides women and children. Many other people went up with them, and also large droves of livestock, both flocks and herds. With the dough the Israelites had brought from Egypt, they baked loaves of unleavened bread. The dough was without yeast because they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves. Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt was 430 years. At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the Lord ’s divisions left Egypt. Because the Lord kept vigil that night to bring them out of Egypt, on this night all the Israelites are to keep vigil to honor the Lord for the generations to come.

The urgency that came with the Exodus was comparable to nothing else. Pharaoh just arose at night and issued an order to Moses to leave with his people. But above it, he also begged him to bless him before he left. He had witnessed the power and influence of the everlasting God and now desired some blessing. Whether his intentions were pure or not, we’re not told but one thing’s clear: pharaoh seemed to have learnt his lesson. However in verses to follow, he seemed to renege on his word again. God’s favor was on the Israelites in such a way that even the Egyptians gave them valuable stuff as they left…instruments of gold and silver. Scripture says that the Lord made the Egyptians ‘ favourably disposed ‘ to them and therefore they were plundered in the process. The book of psalm 23 states that the Lord…’prepares a table for me in the midst of my enemies.’ Such was the situation here as the slave drivers showed favour to the slaves. The Israelites made a fast dash even carrying their half-prepared dough in the process. God had instructed them not to use yeast in bread during the unleavened bread feast before the Passover. Over six hundred thousand men excluding women and children which means that in total, there might have been around 1.5 million or more people in the Exodus. God chose to free His people after 430 years of servitude. It took a long time but God kept His word. Our situations are no different. They may look tough and discouraging. However, God is at work behind the scenes. Just as He dealt with Pharaoh’s heart, He’s dealing with the hearts of those showing hostility to us. He’ll come through for us ultimately. And when it happens, it just might take us by surprise. Just be ready.
