Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

THE PASSOVER MEAL

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “These are the regulations for the Passover meal: “No foreigner may eat it. Any slave you have bought may eat it after you have circumcised him, but a temporary resident or a hired worker may not eat it. “It must be eaten inside the house; take none of the meat outside the house. Do not break any of the bones. The whole community of Israel must celebrate it. “A foreigner residing among you who wants to celebrate the Lord ’s Passover must have all the males in his household circumcised; then he may take part like one born in the land. No uncircumcised male may eat it. The same law applies both to the native-born and to the foreigner residing among you.” All the Israelites did just what the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron. And on that very day the Lord brought the Israelites out of Egypt by their divisions. Exodus 12:43‭-‬51 NIV

The Passover was a celebration God had set aside for His people in remembrance of His deliverance. But not any one could partake of it. Infact He prescribed rules and regulations that go with it one of which entailed restricting any foreigner, slave or stranger from partaking of it unless they were circumsized. Circumsicion was a sign God had given to Abraham to represent the covenant He had made with His people. Though it looked exclusive act for Israelites, God seemed to allow non-Israelites to partake of it and engage in practices He had set aside for His people. In many ways, circumsicion was a forerunner to salvation we attain through Christ Jesus. Christ Himself was a Jew living and preaching the good news among them but ultimately embracing everyone even the Gentiles. God’s desire is to reconcile man back to Him and through this act of assimilating non-Israelites, He was pointing towards salvation through Christ. But also, this was a meal supposed to be eaten only indoors the same way the holy communion is partaken indoors. The Passover feast was a feast of remembrance of the Lord’s deliverance. The holy communion is a feast of remembrance of Christ’s suffering and death on the cross in order to deliver us from sin. But partaking of it must be only if one has made a commitment to God…not through circumsicion but through accepting Christ in his life.
