14 So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared some tasty food, just the way his father liked it. 15 Then Rebekah took the best clothes of Esau her older son, which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. 16 She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins. 17 Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made. 18 He went to his father and said, “My father.” “Yes, my son,” he answered. “Who is it?” 19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing.” 20 Isaac asked his son, “How did you find it so quickly, my son?” “The Lord your God gave me success,” he replied. 21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near so I can touch you, my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.” 22 Jacob went close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he proceeded to bless him. 24 “Are you really my son Esau?” he asked. “I am,” he replied. 25 Then he said, “My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing.” Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank.
Genesis 27:14-25 NIV

Jacob sought to deceive his father the best way he could to obtain the blessings of his brother Esau. Conspiracy within the family is a theme that’s highlighted in this passage of scripture. We see it in earlier chapters in Genesis when Cain plotted to kill his brother, Abel. Now, we see it again when Jacob and his mother Rebekah strike a deal to use trickery to rob Esau of his birthright. Such was the desire that it took planning and presenting oneself with a forged personality. It seemed as if Isaac had his doubts about the entire scenario. We see him questioning Jacob about his fast hunting, we see him reasoning that the voice seems Jacob’s but the body seems Esau’s. We see him seeking confirmation again about the identity of Jacob. However, Jacob succeeds in tricking his father. To him probably the end justified the means. He wanted the blessings so badly, he would do the unthinkable to obtain it. Such a drive pushes us in our day and age. The quest to succeed at all costs pushes some of us towards using even sinful means to make it. Jacob was a blessed man. God had pronounced a blessing on him. However, his trickery and forgery in obtaining a blessing from his father sabotaged God’s perfect plan for him. His position as a blessed man remained. But he would have to toil and suffer in the process. He would have to escape from his brother and dwell with his uncle Laban who would unleash unprecedented trickery upon him. God has blessed us. However, He has called us into obedience to Him. As we seek to attain success, we must also seek to obey God in the process. Disobedience towards God can delay or even nullify the blessings upon our lives. We must seek to walk in purity before Him.
