Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

GOD’S REASSURANCE

10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. 11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 There above it stood the Lord, and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
Genesis 28:10‭-‬15 NIV

There is nothing that’s as comforting as God’s assurance. As Jacob set off from his father’s house, he encountered the presence of God. Verse 12 says that in the dream, there was a staircase leading to heaven and angels were ascending and descending along it. At the top of the staircase was God Himself. Angels are ministering spirits sent by God to minister to us. They are messengers of God who are directed to us to meet us at our points of need. Jacob was a man in need of ministry at this time. Let’s just take a look at the state of his life at this instant: he was a man who had wronged his brother twice, he had tricked his father and now was on the run away from his brother’s fury towards the land of Padan Aram. Here at this settlement called Luz but later on christened Bethel, God sought to assure Jacob. God reached out to him and cemented His commitment to him. God illustrated the desire He has to meet his needs and minister to him. Infact from verse 13-15, He seemed to reiterate the same promise He had given to Abraham. In verse 13, God introduced Himself as the Lord of Abraham and Isaac. Later on, this same God would also be called the God of Jacob. Why? Because He reached out for a relationship with Jacob. God seeks to relate with us. It doesn’t matter our state of hearts or our state of sin, He is reaching out to us even when we grope in darkness. At the end of verse 13 and verse 14, God further reiterates His promise to Abraham through Jacob. He promises him the land he’s lying in. He promises him numerous descendants who’ll inherit the land of the promise. He promises him that all people of the earth will be blessed through his offspring. God keeps His word. Whatever He says, He will do. Circumstances may change, people may change, situations may change, locations may change but He changes not. When He promises, He delivers. Abraham’s faith was in action through the life of his grandson, Jacob. In verse 15, God reassured Jacob further that he would be with him till the end. That He will accomplish all He has promised him. What greater assurance can we have than this. That no matter what mountains we climb or valleys we descend, God is always with us. This makes us confident and ready to face tomorrow with courage. There are those days when we wake up sensing defeat at the start of the day. Our feet seem heavy, our hearts discouraged and our minds are blank as the day passes. Our work seems torturous, our marriages seem an uphill task, friends seem to forsake us and the world seems turned upside down. In those moments, reflect on these words which God spoke to Jacob in verse 15,’ I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land (the land of the promise)’. God will renew our joy. He will renew our strength. As we walk through the treacherous stretch, let’s remember that He’s at work and the promises He’s made to us shall be fulfilled by Him in our lives.
