1 And God spoke all these words: 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 3 “You shall have no other gods before me.

God starts with identifying Himself to His people. The Israelites had identified themselves for a while as slaves. But God reminds them of Who brought them deliverance from slavery. He’s the God who delivered them from persecution and brought to them freedom. An event the common Israelites identified with. They had seen God’s deliverance and redemption. Who is God in our lives? We can look at the snares He’s brought us out of…we can remember the times He healed us from disease…the times He supplied our needs…the times He’s comforted us in our sorrow. He delivered Israel from slavery. Now when asked about their God, they not only spoke of Him but referred to Him through what He had done for them…saved them from slavery. God still reminds His people not to have any other gods besides Him. In our age, few things would rival God’s place in our hearts better than money. It has the captivated our hearts like nothing else. Other possible gods might include fame, sex, knowledge etc. Knowledge plays a crucial role especially in our information driven age. Science and technology has opened up new horizons of invention…new products…easy life. We just might be tempted to attach a high premium on knowledge while denouncing our faith in God. Science in many ways plays god even to some of us believers. We believe that it holds answers to all of our problems but is it so? If that’s the case then why are there so many people starving? If so, why is there rampant environmental degradation? If so, why do deadly diseases still kill many? Science is one of the resources God has granted us to help make our lives better. Though it can improve lives, it’s not the answer to all our problems. God is. He alone is God. He alone is all powerful, all knowing and self sufficient. So God reminds us to have no other gods other than Him. He alone is our alpha and omega.
