4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

Images were moulded figures made of wood, clay, stone or precious metals which substituted God. We see examples of idolatry among a number of Israel’s neighbours such as the Philistines and the Canaanites. God knew that they might be influenced in that direction at one point or the other. This commandment was to remind them of their God. Today, the practice of idolatry might be confined to specific faiths such as Hinduism and Buddhism. They bow down and worship images coupling their worship with pious acts which attract many. Eastern religions are so enticing to today’s enlightened person because they appeal to the emotions. Not necessarily a bad thing. However, they pull people towards worship of images. But it’s not only eastern religions that lure us into worship of images. A multi billion industry operating on the internet is doing the same. Pornography thrives on luring men to lustful images online. Trapped by an insatiable appetite towards sex, men and women bound by lust take to the internet to feast on their ‘images’ of choice. Being an industry that generates billions of dollars annually, it’s not farfetched to imagine how people put in their last penny just to satisfy their lusts. Pornography is not just a trade…it’s an alter that pays homage to images made by man’s ingenuity and projected onto the world wide web for all to see. This continuum flows even into our daily lives where simple acts end up being sexualized. God warns His people against images…against idols then. But so does He today. God should be the only subject of our worship because without Him, we’re nothing.
