7 “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

God’s name is not a magic wand waved in every conversation. It’s holy. Christ said that let your yes be yes and your no be no. But that’s not always the case. To arouse believability, we at times invoke God’s name. Something that’s not right according to God’s word. Remember the episode in the book of Acts when the sons of Sceva attempted to cast demons out of a possessed man. They used the name of God. They said, “In the name of Christ who Paul preaches, come out of this man…” Instead of casting out the evil spirit, they were overwhelmed and defeated. They were beaten senseless. They used the name of God for their own benefit and lost in the process. Even today, our court systems prompt us to invoke God’s name through swearing an oath. But as we do so, we must remember to remain true to our word and do what’s expected of us. God’s name is Holy. If we misuse it, we’ll not escape unpunished.
