Murder, adultery, theft and false testimony are sins we’re warned about in the ten commandments. All these wrongs had something in common…they were ills committed against one another…wrongs we do against our fellow man. God’s not only concerned with our relationship with Him but also how we relate to each other. Murder might not be necessarily mean taking a weapon and killing someone but just the simple act of disliking someone. Christ spoke in Matthew 5 saying that the act of hate is tantamount to murder in the eyes of God. The act of adultery is not necessarily the act of sex with someone who’s not your spouse but the act of looking at another woman lustfully as Christ put it in Matthew 5. Rarely do we think of it this way. God’s standards are very much higher than ours. In another instant Christ equated the act of divorce and remarriage to adultery. Zacheus was a man credited with turning back from sin and returning to God. He had all along lived a life of theft. He swindled and conned his way to prominence but when he met Christ, things changed. He got convicted and turned to Him. He also chose to return back the things he had stolen to the owners. God’s word warns us against theft. Do we steal whenever we work? But lastly, false testimony represents an act we so often commit without thinking…lying. It seems justifiable at times but is it right in the eyes of God? Probably we think that we can twist the truth because we think that it’s only known to us. However, God is in the picture. He testifies on our behalf. These commandments were to guide God’s people to live a life of righteousness not only before Him but before each other.
