LIFE SCRIPTS

Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

17 Then Jacob put his children and his wives on camels, 18 and he drove all his livestock ahead of him, along with all the goods he had accumulated in Paddan Aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan. 19 When Laban had gone to shear his sheep, Rachel stole her father’s household gods. 20 Moreover, Jacob deceived Laban the Aramean by not telling him he was running away. 21 So he fled with all he had, crossed the Euphrates River, and headed for the hill country of Gilead.
Genesis 31:17‭-‬21 NIV

Jacob fled from Laban. He took all he had accumulated when in Laban’s household, his wives and children and took off. He didn’t even inform him of his departure. But reference is made in verse 19 that Rachel stole her father’s household gods. This points to something about Laban’s personality. He seemed not to be a man who believed in the God of heaven. He seemed to be immersed in some form of idolatry. But why would Rachel desire to steal idols belonging to her father? Hadn’t she seen God at work through her husband, Jacob? She was even privy to God instructing Jacob to leave. She had even encouraged him together with her sister Leah to proceed and follow God’s leading. However, here, she seemed to have faith in idols instead of the God she had seen leading her husband. Isn’t this situation familiar at times? After seeing Gods leading hand in our lives, we succumb to a moment of lack of faith just when calamity strikes?
